UHCL to serve as Harris County polling place for 2020 election

University of Houston-Clear Lake will serve as a Harris County polling place for the first time for the upcoming 2020 election.

The polling station for early voting, Oct. 13-30, will be in Bayou Building, room 1510 (Garden Room), and the polling station for Election Day, Nov. 3, will be in the Recreation and Wellness Center.

UH-Clear Lake believes in and advocates for the importance of being engaged in one’s community,” said Dillon Nash, coordinator of organizations and activities in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership .

“The opportunity to have a polling place on our campus was a no-brainer in order to continue to support our students and their experience to become civically engaged global citizens.”

Becoming a polling place is part of efforts by the Division of Student Affairs to grow student participation in civic engagement activities. Work began earlier this year when the division developed a Voter Friendly Campus Plan for the 2020-21 academic year, which outlines goals for boosting civic engagement with programs centered around registering to vote, voting in elections and learning more about the political process.

Staff from the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership became Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrars earlier this year to serve as a resource for students living in Harris, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston and Montgomery Counties.

Together, staff worked to share information and resources to prepare students to vote in the Texas primary elections, and hosted events for Constitution Day, National Voter Registration Day, and regular voter registration sessions through September.

The university is working with Harris County officials to ensure healthy and safety guidelines, as well as Texas Election Code, are being followed. Details on UHCL polling stations, voting hours and more are available online . For county voting information, visit harriscountyvotes.com .
