Honoring a legacy: UHCL's 50 years of faculty excellence and innovation
As the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) marks its 50th anniversary, it paused to honor the exceptional faculty whose dedication and innovation have shaped its success at the Faculty Appreciation Reception. For five decades, the UH-Clear Lake faculty has been a driving force behind the university’s evolution, turning visions into reality through groundbreaking research, award-winning teaching, and unwavering commitment to student success.
UHCL President Richard Walker highlighted the milestone celebration and the profound impact of the university’s educators on academic excellence and community growth.
“We launched in 1974, and as our university’s logo says ‘we’re still soaring,’ said Walker. “It is all about student success, and our students would not be successful without the dedication and support of our faculty.”
Furthermore, President Walker mentioned that UHCL is one of four universities in the University of Houston System, but it is a very distinct institution. UHCL’s unique focus on personalized education and flexibility has created a learning environment where innovation thrives and meaningful impact is achieved.
Dr. Christopher Maynard, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, emphasized that learning at UHCL extends beyond traditional settings. It happens not only in the classroom but also during faculty office hours, in the hallways, and in the library. Learning thrives in any environment where ideas are shared and knowledge is exchanged. This approach to education is a key factor in the university’s success.
“It is the reason our students are successful and continue to be long after they leave UHCL,” said Maynard. “Students are the ‘why,’ and faculty are the ‘how.’ Our commitment to student success would not be possible without faculty,” he continued. “Thank you for everything you’ve done and for everything you will continue to do for our students.”
Honorees Dr. David Malin and Dr. Charles McKay, both charter faculty members and pillars of the UHCL community, exemplified the enduring spirit of the university. Malin continues his impactful research in behavioral neuroscience, determined to complete his significant work.
“With support from a pharmaceutical company, we’re working on the relationship between brain, drugs, and behavior and identifying one of the mechanisms of narcotics dependence,” said Malin. “This is kind of my last ‘big project.’ I am determined to finish that, and they won’t get rid of me until I finish.”
McKay, a professor emeritus and retiree, continues contributing to students' success through mentoring, consulting, and staying connected with former colleagues. Residing in the Clear Lake area, McKay remains as proud of his community now as he was when he first arrived.
“This university was established to support the Human Space program and the community, as requested by Johnson Space Center,” said McKay. “Over the years, we’ve seen remarkable transformations, especially in technology, and our students now hold positions worldwide that continue to make us proud.”
McKay said faculty have the responsibility of providing a first-class education for students to provide them with opportunities to serve the needs of people in the community and the organizations UHCL is lucky to be neighbors and partners with.
“As long as we are advancing knowledge to the best of our ability, we are fulfilling our role,” said McKay. “Being with my colleagues in the same room again is a great honor; it brings back many warm memories and reflects the many positive achievements of UHCL,” he continued. “The university deserves commendation, not only for the efforts of the faculty but for the significant contributions of the entire staff.”
As UHCL embarks on its next chapter, it does so with a legacy of excellence and a forward-looking vision, driven by the passion and dedication of its faculty and staff. The university’s commitment to shaping future leaders and advancing knowledge continues to define its success, ensuring that UHCL remains a beacon of innovation and excellence for generations to come.
