From lab coats to leadership: Finding purpose through chemistry
When Eman Alwarsh transferred to the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL), she was not only looking for a school, but something greater. She found a tight-knit academic community where passion meets purpose, and where she could grow from a curious student into a confident scientist, leader, and future educator. As she nears completing her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a 4.0 GPA, Eman’s story exemplifies how UHCL prepares students to thrive in academia and beyond.
“I chose UHCL because of its small class sizes and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with professors and peers,” Eman shared. “The Chemistry Program’s strong encouragement of research really stood out to me.”
UHCL’s community became the foundation for a transformative academic experience. With the guidance of dedicated faculty and a Chemistry Program accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS), Eman has taken full advantage of every opportunity — from tutoring to lab research and club leadership. For Eman, chemistry is not just a subject, it is the key to unlocking the mysteries of the universe.
“Chemistry has always fascinated me because it is the foundation of so many things in our world,” said Eman. “It challenges me to think critically and solve problems creatively.”
At UHCL, those challenges came to life in the chemistry lab. Through rigorous courses and hands-on research, Eman honed essential skills in scientific writing, public speaking, and experimental design; skills that will carry her through graduate school and into the classroom as a future professor.
One of the most impactful aspects of Eman’s journey has been her mentorship under Dr. Charuksha Walgama, assistant professor of chemistry.
“Dr. Walgama was the first professor to reach out to me,” Eman said. “He provided me with so many opportunities — becoming an embedded tutor, working in his lab, even contributing to a publication.”
Through these experiences, Eman discovered her love for teaching and mentoring, further solidifying her desire to pursue graduate studies and eventually become a professor.
Another pivotal moment came in Dr. Yi Su’s physical chemistry lab — a challenging course that pushed Eman to her academic limits. Weekly 30-page reports transformed her writing and analytical thinking, helping her conquer past struggles and emerge with a newfound confidence in her scientific voice.
For Eman, UHCL offered more than just an education — it provided a community of support.
“Balancing coursework, research, and personal responsibilities hasn’t always been easy,” Eman admitted. “But UHCL’s faculty and student services made all the difference. Whether through office hours, tutoring, or just someone to talk to, I always had someone in my corner.”
Outside the classroom, Eman has also made her mark as the president of UHCL’s Chemistry Club. The role has allowed her to connect with peers who share her enthusiasm for science and has provided her with invaluable leadership experience. Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. As a recipient of the prestigious Welch Scholarship, Eman was recognized for her academic excellence and research potential.
“Being a Welch Scholar validates the hard work I’ve put into my studies,” Eman said. “It motivates me to keep pushing forward and gives me the freedom to fully engage in my education without worrying as much about finances.”
With graduate school on the horizon, Eman is focused on continuing her studies at UHCL and one day inspiring students as her professors inspired her.
I want to be the best professor I can be. I want to be that mentor who sees potential in a student and helps them grow.
Her advice to future students? Dive in early. “Get involved in research,” Eman urged. “It’s not just about textbooks — it’s about asking original questions, making discoveries, and finding your voice as a scientist.”
