From hardship to honor: Natalie Chacon named UHCL commencement speaker
As absurd as it would’ve sounded to myself a year ago, I’m grateful for the hardships. They were part of the journey that led me here.
When Natalie Chacon takes the stage at the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s (UHCL) Spring 2025 Commencement, she will not just be sharing a speech, but sharing a journey that speaks to perseverance, purpose, and the transformative power of education. Her story is not just one of academic success, but of personal resilience, quiet courage, and a deep passion for helping others flourish.
Natalie’s path to a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management was born from a long-standing interest in Industrial-Organizational Psychology.
“Human resources (HR) overlaps a lot with Industrial Organizational Psychology, which was a passion of mine during my undergraduate years,” said Natalie. “I pursued HR because it allows me to work directly with people in ways that improve their daily lives.”
Her dream is to shape the future of workplace culture through professional development and mental health awareness — two pillars she believes are essential for employee well-being and growth.
For Natalie, choosing UHCL was not just about finding a school. It was about finding the right school — a college with a nationally recognized program and a deep commitment to student success. “The Master of Arts in Human Resource Management kept coming up as one of the best in the nation,” said Natalie. But what she found at UHCL went beyond rankings. She found a community that nurtured her passion, supported her growth, and believed in her when she needed it most.
Throughout her academic journey, Natalie juggled the pressure of a demanding full-time job and the emotional weight of family struggles and personal loss. It was a year that tested every part of her being. But with every challenge, she grew stronger.

She found mentorship and wisdom in professors like Dr. Kevin Wooten, whose guidance and attention to detail have left a lasting mark. Student organizations like Hawks for HR gave her a platform to connect, network, and prepare for the real world, providing resume workshops, professional panels, and events that helped students like her take their first confident steps into the field.
Through her coursework and campus involvement, Natalie honed essential skills such as time management, adaptability, effective communication, and collaborative problem-solving. These were not just academic exercises; they were real-world simulations of the career she dreams of, working with people from all walks of life toward common goals.
Natalie is preparing for an exciting new chapter as she relocates to Seattle — a city that reflects her spirit with majestic mountains, quiet strength, and natural beauty. She will continue her work in disability claims for veterans while transitioning into her next role in HR. Looking ahead, Natalie hopes to one day become a professor, inspiring and guiding the next generation of HR professionals.
Being named UHCL’s Spring 2025 Commencement Speaker is a moment that still feels surreal to Natalie. It is more than an honor — it symbolizes how far she has come. “This is far beyond what I could’ve imagined for myself a year ago,” Natalie said. “I hope to inspire my peers and tell a story that will resonate with them for years to come.”
Natalie’s message to her fellow graduates is rooted in experience and grace: “The hardships, setbacks, and challenges in life are inevitable. Learn to embrace them instead of running from them — because that’s where transformation happens,” she said.
