Elsie Bura: A journey of dreams, data, and defying the odds at UHCL

If one asked Elsie Bura years ago where she saw herself today, the answer might have been vague — something tech-related or theatre. She never imagined how her story would ultimately unfold at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL), where the unimaginable became possible and personal.

Elsie's journey to UHCL did not begin with a detailed plan or a perfect roadmap — it started with curiosity, courage, and an unexpected act of kindness. Long before she was a commencement speaker, data analyst, and Spirit Squad cheerleader, she was just a student who came to UHCL’s campus to study, drawn by its tranquil beauty and inviting atmosphere. One day in the fall of 2022, she walked into the Transfer Advising office without an appointment. That spontaneous decision, and the grace of Director Kristi Rickman, who took the time to listen, guide, and advocate for her, would change everything.

In just a few months, Elsie was officially a Hawk, scholarship in hand, purpose in heart.

“I was drawn to UHCL’s small size, walkability, and close-knit campus community with small classes, especially since my friends spoke highly of it,” said Elsie. “I truly thrive in more personal environments. I was accepted for the fall 2023 semester, and now, two years later, here we are.”

Elsie is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, driven by a passion to blend technology with creativity. “There’s hardly an industry today that doesn’t rely on tech,” Elsie said. “I wanted to use computer science in creative spaces — to build bridges between worlds.”

 Her senior project, ‘Scene It Before’ — a collaborative, user-friendly platform for stage designers — brought that vision to life.

“Think ‘Google Docs meets stage design,’” Elsie explained. “That’s the crossover I’ve always envisioned: bridging the gap between two passions by unlocking new possibilities in the arts through tech.”

But like any good story, Elsie’s path was not without its trials. Transferring mid-degree felt like entering a movie already halfway through. Everyone had their friend groups, their routines, and their rhythm. “It was a trial by fire,” Elsie admitted, reflecting on the five upper-level computer science classes she juggled in one semester, while also navigating the constraints of being an international student with no room for academic missteps.

Yet the pressure Elsie felt forged powerful bonds. “The late-night study sessions, shared struggles, and inside jokes — the friends I made became my family.”

Elsie’s sense of belonging only deepened with an internship in UHCL’s Institutional Research office. There, she analyzed data and uncovered a new passion.

 “I had my own office, with my name on the door — that was cool,” Elsie said. “But more than that, I realized my degree had prepared me for so much more than I expected.”

Elsie found a calling in data analytics through structured query language (SQL), Power BI, and impactful campus-wide projects. With the support of her mentors and a hands-on learning environment, she built her skills and the resume to take on the world.

“In the one and a half years in this position, I honed my ability to communicate data-driven insights to non-technical stakeholders — a skill I know will serve me well in any data-centric role,” said Elsie. “I also assisted in campus-wide Power BI trainings and published dashboards on the university website, giving me hands-on experience in delivering data solutions that were technically sound, user-focused, and widely used.”

Elsie also stepped into leadership, serving as the captain of her senior project team. It was one of the most demanding roles she has ever held — physically, emotionally, and mentally.

 “There were moments I thought I’d break,” Elsie said. “But I couldn’t. I had to show up. For the team, for the project, and myself.”

That experience tested her endurance and revealed a side of herself she had not yet met: a thoughtful, resilient, empathetic leader. Now she dreams of pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in data or business analytics and someday answer to “Dr. Elsie Bura.”

Amidst all the technical milestones and academic grit, some of Elsie’s most transformative moments happened far from a classroom. In her final year, she joined the UHCL Spirit Squad — a childhood dream come true.

“The uniform, the pom-poms, the bow — it was pure joy,” Elsie said.

But more than that, it became a symbol of visibility and representation. At one event, a woman approached her and said, “We don’t often see cheerleaders with afros. Many little Black girls see you and see themselves — so keep going,” Elsie recalled.

That moment left a mark on Elsie’s heart. “It reminded me that how I show up matters — in and out of uniform,” said Elsie.

Looking back, Elsie does not see only a college experience, but a tapestry of moments, mentors, challenges, and triumphs. “I arrived in Houston not knowing a soul,” said Elsie. “Now I’m trying to figure out how to fit 40 people into a restaurant after graduation.”

The people who gave her rides, meals, advice, and unwavering love became her chosen family. She is endlessly thankful for them and for the community that made UHCL more than just a school.

When she received the call inviting her to speak at Spring 2025 Commencement, Elsie thought she was in trouble. “My first thought was, ‘I didn’t do it!’,” said Elsie. But when the real news landed, she was overjoyed. “Nobody wanted this more than I did,” Elsie said. “And no one will give it more than I will.”

 With the eyes of her classmates and family upon her, Elsie will share a story not just of her journey, but of what is possible when a university like UHCL comes together with a student like Elsie Bura.

Elsie’s advice to students is simple: “Breathe. Take it in. You’ve dreamed of this moment for years — don’t let it pass you by,” she said.

 Elsie’s journey is more than a success story; it is a testament to growth, determination, and the power of believing. At UHCL, the unimaginable is not just achievable — it is often inevitable.
