A journey of advocacy and leadership at UHCL

Zachary Sheriff never expected to attend University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL). In fact, he does not even remember applying. But when that blue and green acceptance letter arrived, it set off a chain of events that would shape his future in ways he never imagined.

Today, as Student Government (SG) president and a fierce advocate for education, Zachary has found his voice and purpose. Through leadership, mentorship, and advocacy, he is making an impact on campus and beyond.

Zachary is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Education with Core Subjects 4-8 and a minor in Instructional Technology. His journey has been one of self-discovery, growth, and finding ways to uplift others.

“Since that moment, UHCL has supported me in every way possible,” Zachary said. “The experiences I have gained here have been transformative.”

As the president of UHCL’s SG, Zachary’s leadership journey has been shaped by initiatives like expanding the roles of senators and committee representatives and creating programs like Commuter Appreciation Week to ensure every student’s voice is heard. Zachary said these projects are not just about policies; but about building a community where every student feels empowered.

“We’ve been working diligently on revising our SG Constitution to strengthen our governance structure and better serve the student body,” said Zachary. “We’re also developing a Common Hour Resolution to establish a common hour on campus.”

Zachary's leadership roles not only shaped his impact at UHCL but also deepened his commitment to advocacy and education beyond campus.

Being selected as the Texas State Teacher Association Aspiring Educator State President was a turning point in Zachary’s career. Initially appointed as vice president, he was later elected president. This experience opened his eyes to the political landscape of education and reinforced the aspiring educator's power in shaping the future. Through his advocacy, Zachary has learned the importance of collective action, knowing that with 2,000 aspiring educators across the state, they can influence education policy, create change, and give voice to those who need it most.

Serving as president of the Black Student Association gave Zachary a deeper understanding of how leadership, empathy, and relationship-building drive meaningful change. Together with his team, they created an environment that fostered innovation, engagement, and recognition, which led to several awards.

“These experiences have strengthened my ability to understand different needs and build supportive, collaborative teams,” said Zachary. “I have carried these skills into every aspect of my life — from SG to my leadership role in the Texas State Teacher Association and even personally. They have helped me balance multiple responsibilities with confidence.”

Preparing for significant events like introducing President Richard Walker at the 2024 State of the University Address has shown Zachary the importance of preparation and teamwork. In those moments, he was reminded that leadership is more than just words; it is about being prepared, staying calm, and delivering a message that resonates with others.

“Introducing Dr. Walker at the State of the University Address was incredible,” said Zachary. “I was appreciative of every moment, from start to finish. We practiced as a team, and I utilized the public speaking skills I honed at UHCL to ensure a smooth delivery.”

Zachary’s leadership has not gone unnoticed. Assistant Dean of Students Kristi Randolph Simon described him as an ‘exceptional leader’ whose passion for education and advocacy is truly inspiring.

Zachary's work at UHCL has influenced how he views education, especially equity and representation. As a future black male educator, Zachary sees education as the most powerful tool for change. He is passionate about creating classrooms where students, especially those from underrepresented communities, see themselves reflected in the curriculum, faculty, and leadership. Zachary wants to be an educator who advocates for social justice, inspires students to engage with their education, and provides them with the tools they need to succeed inside and outside the classroom.

“Advocating for equitable funding, promoting culturally responsive teaching, and enhancing access to resources is crucial,” said Zachary. “Additionally, fostering community partnerships and mentorship programs can provide valuable support for underrepresented students, helping level the playing field and create more inclusive educational environments in Texas.”

Zachary highlighted that time management is critical in balancing his leadership, academic, and personal responsibilities.

“I prioritize tasks. Academics come first, always,” said Zachary. “I use my time wisely and maintain open communication with my teams,” he continued. “ Self-care and regular reflection help me stay focused.”

At UHCL, Zachary has honed his leadership, communication, and community engagement skills. Professors and staff have played a pivotal role in helping him grow, always providing guidance and support, whether during his most challenging or easiest days.

“These lessons will stick with me far beyond graduation and will guide me as I continue my journey to become an educator who advocates for a better, more inclusive education system.”

Zachary’s advice for students to be successful is to take action, even when nervous.

“Step into the unknown with an open heart and ask the questions that lead to your growth,” said Zachary. “Let your fear guide you, not limit you. UHCL has given me the tools, the resources, and the community to be an advocate for myself and others. I hope it will do the same for you.”

Furthermore, Zach said that SG exists to serve and represent UHCL students.

“Share your concerns and praises so we can amplify your voice, ensuring UHCL improves for all students. Trust us with your feedback to create positive change,” said Zachary.

With each step forward, Zachary proves that leadership is not just about titles; it is about action. His journey serves as an inspiration to future generations of students, showing that passion and purpose can transform lives and entire communities.
