UHCL Counseling Services transitions to ‘Counseling and Mental Health Center’

Written by: Lauren Sawyer

University of Houston- Clear Lake’s Counseling Services department transitioned to the Counseling and Mental Health Center effective August 1. Executive Director of the Counseling and Mental Health Center Cynthia Cook said the department wanted to minimize confusion with the name change.

“The name ‘Counseling Services’ often gets confused with academic advising with high school students or transfers from community colleges,” Cook said. “The new name more accurately reflects the psychological and mental health nature of our services. There are sometimes more mental health concerns than basic counseling would imply to students.”

Cook said another reason for the name change was to reflect the comprehensive range of mental health services offered by the Counseling and Mental Health Center.

“We have more than just counseling; we have psychiatry and other services,” she said.

The UH-Clear Lake Counseling and Mental Health Center offers various services such as individual, group and couples therapy, psychiatric services, self-help resources, workshops and presentations. It also offers ‘The Mind Spa’ which is a free biofeedback lab and relaxation room. The lab features massage chairs, aromatherapy, yoga mats, coloring for calm, water features and sound spas, and more. This room can be reserved by calling the Counseling and Mental Health Center.

All counseling at UHCL’s Counseling and Mental Health Center is confidential and follows the privacy and confidentiality practices policies. Most services are free to enrolled UHCL students. For more information about the Counseling and Mental Health Center, visit www.uhcl.edu/cmhc/
