UHCL launches undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering
The University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) is proud to announce the launch of its new Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering (AE) program, a transformative educational initiative designed to meet the growing demands of the aerospace industry. The program will equip students with critical skills and hands-on experience, preparing them to thrive in one of the nation’s most dynamic and rapidly evolving sectors. It will shape the next generation of engineers and drive advancements in space exploration, aviation, and aerospace technology.

The program responds to the surging demand for aerospace engineers in Texas, where major employers such as NASA, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and the Houston Spaceport are already driving aerospace innovation. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the demand for aerospace engineers is expected to grow by 18.5% by 2030, outpacing national projections. UHCL’s program is one of only five bachelor’s programs in aerospace engineering offered in Texas and the only one within 100 miles of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, positioning the university as a vital hub for aerospace education in the Houston region.
UHCL’s AE program blends academic rigor with hands-on learning, ensuring that graduates have theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Students will master areas like fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and solid mechanics while engaging in internships and collaborative projects with leading aerospace companies.
The new program leverages UHCL’s strong partnerships with industry leaders such as Boeing, KBR, and NASA. These alliances provide students with hands-on experience through internships and collaborative research projects. UHCL graduates will enter the workforce with a competitive edge, equipped with the technical skills and industry experience needed to succeed in the aerospace sector.

The program is housed in the 121,000-square-foot STEM and Classroom Building, which features state-of-the-art research and teaching labs. In the coming years, UHCL plans to expand its facilities to include five specialized labs dedicated to aerodynamics, aerospace design, propulsion, vibration & control, and aerospace materials & composites.
