UHCL Joins Texas Leadership Scholars Program for Fall 2027 Cohort
The University of Houston-Clear Lake has been approved to join the Texas Leadership Scholars Program for the Fall 2027 cohort, giving current Texas high school seniors a new opportunity to pursue the statewide scholarship and leadership program at UHCL.
The Texas Leadership Scholars Program supports high-achieving students with financial need through a combination of financial assistance and high-impact experiences, including mentoring, leadership development, undergraduate research and professional development.
“Joining the Texas Leadership Scholars Program reflects our commitment to expanding opportunity while ensuring students have the support and experiences they need to succeed,” UHCL President Richard Walker said. “We look forward to welcoming our first scholars and helping them develop their talents, pursue their ambitions and prepare to make a difference in their professions and communities.”
Each year, 250 students statewide are selected as Texas Leadership Scholars. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and academic achievement as well as leadership and service in their high school or community.
Texas Leadership Scholars may receive renewable financial support for up to four years or eight long semesters, provided they continue to meet program requirements. Participating institutions ensure that board-designated tuition and fees are covered through a combination of federal, state and institutional aid, based on financial need. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board also provides scholars with housing and food support based on the average cost at their institution.
The program extends beyond financial assistance. Scholars participate in mentoring and professional development and have opportunities to pursue undergraduate research, job shadowing, networking, leadership programming and summer experiences. They also become part of a statewide network designed to support their academic, personal and professional development.
“At its core, this program is about helping students turn opportunity into long-term success,” said Eric Tack, UHCL associate vice president for Student Success. “Our scholars will have access not only to financial support, but also to mentors, leadership experiences and opportunities that help them build confidence, make meaningful connections and prepare for what comes after graduation.”
Applications for the fall 2027 Texas Leadership Scholars cohort open Oct. 1, 2026, and close Feb. 16, 2027. Applicants must be graduating seniors from accredited Texas public high schools, including open-enrollment charter schools, and meet the program’s financial need, academic, leadership and enrollment requirements.
Students applying for the program may rank up to three participating universities to which they have applied, including UHCL. Students selected for a Texas Leadership Scholars award must enroll full time at the participating institution that awards the scholarship to become part of that institution’s scholar cohort.
Students receive access to the Texas Leadership Scholars application through a staff member at their high school.
