Thriving as a transfer student at UHCL
When Marlin Martinez packed her bags to leave Texas State University, she was unsure if transferring was the right decision. Moving to a new school felt overwhelming, but as soon as she stepped onto the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) campus, she felt something different — a sense of belonging.
According to recent Institute for Higher Education Policy data, nearly 40% of all college students in the U.S. transfer from one institution to another. Marlin is one of them, now pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Education with Core Subjects EC-6, specializing in Early Childhood. Inspired by her mother, who has been a teacher for over 20 years, she has always had a passion for education.
“I love young kids, and I think their fresh outlook on life is inspiring,” Marlin said. “Becoming an educator will be a joyful and rewarding career for me.”
A need for change drove Marlin’s decision to transfer to UHCL, but what she found was more than just a new school; it was a place where she felt supported and empowered. Although initially apprehensive, UHCL’s welcoming environment quickly made her feel at home.
“It feels very comfortable and safe here,” Marlin said, echoed by many transfer students who have found their own space in the university’s close-knit community.
One of the key factors that drew Marlin to UHCL was the personalized learning experience. At Texas State, she was in classes with over 300 students. At UHCL, her classes have just 15 students. This change has allowed her to enjoy a more personalized education where she feels comfortable asking questions and engaging with professors who genuinely care about her success.
“The professors I have engaged with have been helpful and kind throughout my transition,” said Marlin, emphasizing the importance of support that goes beyond the curriculum. “I don’t feel afraid to ask questions or ‘bother’ them because of how they welcome curiosity with an open mind,” she continued. “I love how they want to see you succeed and truly learn, not just pass the class.”
Despite excelling academically, Marlin understands the financial challenges that come with pursuing a degree. She emphasized that scholarships are crucial in alleviating pressure and enabling her to focus on her studies. This spring, she hopes to be selected as a scholarship recipient and serve as a UHCL ambassador, using her experience to empower students to have the confidence to try new experiences and branch out.
“Moving here was scary for me initially, but staying in your comfort zone doesn’t allow growth to happen,” said Marlin. “I would want to encourage future students to be brave. With bravery comes major rewards.”
Through Marlin’s studies at UHCL, she has learned the importance of individualized education, ensuring every student is empowered and valued.
“I’ve learned how to approach teaching without a ‘one-size-fits-all’ mindset,” said Marlin, a skill she believes will be invaluable in her future career.
Marlin's journey at UHCL is just beginning. Still, her passion for education and the support and opportunities she has found at the university set her up for a future where she can make a difference — one student at a time. Her experience reflects UHCL’s broader commitment to helping transfer students thrive.
