The Office of Strategic Partnerships at University of Houston-Clear Lake is a vital resource that supports students seeking internships that can help connect them to the job that will begin their career after graduating. Alexis Solis, a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Management with a Concentration in Human Resources, secured an internship at Wellby Financial with the assistance of OSP.  Solis said her internship experience has been fulfilling.

“The process of becoming an intern was like applying for a job. I waited for two weeks to find out my acceptance, and remember tearing up from the excitement after I heard I was accepted,” she said. “The work culture at Wellby is amazing and I felt very welcomed from the minute I entered the building. I know that the leaders at Wellby would stand by my side to face any challenges, and I would grow from them.”

Solis said she aspires to be a human resources coordinator, and that she has learned what it takes to be a leader during her internship.

“I would love to be the first person new hires meet so I can be a confidant to them. The soft skills and leadership skills that I am learning are benefiting me the most professionally and personally,” she said.

She said that she rotates around different departments, shadows her appointed leader, and performs any projects that she has been assigned for the day at her internship. Because there are many kinds of positions, Solis said she recommends Wellby to students pursuing any degree.

“The great thing about this internship is that it is not dedicated to one department,” she said. “The interns are rotating through each department and I think it is a great way to discover other interests. I personally have found an interest in lending and risk and legal,” she explained. “Wellby is a great place to be when you have many interests.”

Solis said UHCL’s Career Services is not utilized enough by students, and she recommends students use resources available to them because she knows what it is like to be in school and feel confused about her future. She said Career Services is a great place to start because it offers students resume and cover letter assistance, mock interview coaching, and career counseling and exploration, and more.

“Career Services helped me find my purpose,” she said. “They offered support and assistance with anything I needed help with.”

Solis said her advice to college students would be, to not stress about “getting it right” just out of college.

"I have met a lot of successful people who’ve all said that it took them years to find ‘the perfect job.’ We are too hard on ourselves. Everything is a lesson, and it is important we learn from those lessons to achieve success,” she said.
